Now you are ready to start setting up live rock and adding the rest of the water. You have laid a good foundation with live sand. Live rock for a marine tank will be the next essential layer.
Regardless of the type of live rock you have, the basics are still the same. You want live rock for marine tank to provide the basic bacteria which will complete the food chain, allowing your environment to thrive. Setting up the live rock is like arranging your furniture - it is about what you like. My favorite type of rock is Haitian. Because of it’s unique shape and indentations throughout the rock, it “builds” easily, creating a unique environment for your reef inhabitants.
Live rock for marine tanks comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some types are more limited. By looking at a variety of different types prior to purchase, you can find a happy medium where the best of both worlds can be found.
When setting up live rock, it is important to remember a few things. On average, Fiji rock is twice the density of Haitian rock. Typically, it requires 2lbs per gallon of Fiji rock to create a rock structure which meets the biological needs of the marine tank. On the other hand, Haitian rock is very porous and requires approximately 50% less than Fiji.Live Rock for marine tanks is as essential to the under water “home” you are creating as furniture in your own home. Imagine all of your furniture piled into one room on top of everything. Would your family like that room very much?? Furthermore, the other rooms would be rather empty.
When choosing, choose for the way the rock is structured- NOT the color of the rock. Here is why:1) Changing the color of the live rock is as easy as keeping your water chemistry where it needs to be.2) If you fail to keep the water chemistry right, your beautiful purple rock will loose its color in just a matter of weeks.
