As a beginner, setting up a saltwater aquarium can seem overwhelming, but it does not have to be! You just need a plan!

Are you new to the coral reef hobby? Want a tank but don't know where to start a saltwater aquarium? This section will guide you through some of the common mistakes made by beginners and provide you a plan of action to follow. As a beginner, a saltwater aquarium setup guide will answer the majority of your questions and help empower you while you begin your journey.

Do you have an idea of how large or how small you want your first aquarium to be? The first step is to purchase an aquarium. My recommendations are to check your local newspaper and used equipment areas. Fortunately for you but unfortunately for someone else, they may have gotten into the hobby without a clear plan on how to properly start their new hobby. Hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars later, they want OUT & FAST!! You can save a lot of money IF you find the right scenario. Remember- you can buy a tank WITH OUT a drilled overflow box (an area inside the aquarium allowing the water to leave the main display area & then circulate back after running through the skimmer, etc) for less money than a tank WITH a drilled overflow box! HOWEVER, you get what you pay for- external overflow boxes are notorious for over flowing and getting clogged up. Yes, initially it will cost you more, but in the long run the extra expense is well worth it!
